About Automobile Leather

1． When buying automobiles, we will notice that some has offered genuine leather seat cover while others not.
Generally, there are two kinds of market accessible by leather factories. One is to supply directly to OEM for decorating new automobiles; the other is to offer the decoration of automobile cushion, steering wheel and gear stick to aftermarket.

2． How many kinds of automobile leather can be categorized?
In regard to the raw material, automobile leather can be fallen in two categories: scalper leather and buffalo leather. The former features fine veins and softness while the latter is stiffer to feel with coarse pore. At present, there is more scalper leather than buffalo leather in the market.
Leather can be classified as top level or as second level. Top-level leather features good flexibility and durability while second level leather features small tensile extent, stiff to feel, and short service life. So the price gap is wide.
For meet the various requirements in the market, the leather would be pressed with different grain, such as, lichee grain, Benz grain, etc.

3． How to identify the quality of leather on the basis of technology? (Professional)
Leather is judged from the following respects: odor, specific gravity, sunlight resistance, heat resistance, migration resistance, atomizing performance, and friction resistance.
A：Odor
Low quality leather will bring adverse effect to people in the airtight automobiles. Its odor will result in being dazzled, feeling dizzy, etc. that will undermine our enjoying driving. Curved type leather smells bad mixing the odor of tannin exact, synthetic tanning agent, modified fish oil greasing agent and paint. While if applying natural high quality fish oil and synthetic fragrance agent, leather would smell better.
B：Specific Gravity
The thickness of automobile leather is generally between 1.0mm to 1.2mm. (Weight: 7.00G to 900G per square meter) Decreasing the weight of leather will benefit to the production with less fuel, but it cannot beyond the limit because we have to guarantee the splitting tensile strength of leather and its other performances.
C：Sunlight Resistance
Tested under such condition where temperature is 90oC, humidity is high, and ultraviolet radiation is strong, leather should proved to having high stability and high hydrolyzing resistance.
D：Heat resistance stability/contractibility
Under high temperature, leather tends to be shrunk. The temperature of such parts that touch high temperature, e.g. meter, is probably beyond 100oC that will damage them. Generally, if the leather remains its former color and shape after being placed under 100oC to 120oC for 24 to 144 hours, we can identify it as qualified product.
F：Migration Resistance
Temperature will give rise to making leather turn yellow and migrate apart from affecting its contractibility and area being heated. If low-grade chemical material is applied, unfixed chemical element will be migrated from the roughcast.
G： Atomizing performance
Volatilizable elements from those materials applied in automobile will present themselves as gas and form mist when touching the cold glass. The large incidence of window in modern automobile makes heat inside more concentrated, which will enable more volatilizable element to become gas and then influence safe driving.
H：Friction Resistance
With regard to friction resistance, automobile leather should stand special test compared with the other types of leather. The evaluation of friction resistance is based on the wear degree of its surface and contaminated quantity due to rubbing felt. It is of the importance to conduct the test according to TABLE inspection method. The performance of scratching resistance, twist resistance, scar proof, etc should be tested.

4． I have little knowledge of automobile, how can I choose high quality leather?
Firstly, smell the leather to make sure whether it has bad odor. Low quality leather generally smells awful; secondly, examine its tensile extent. Imported leather often enjoys large tensile extent (50 square feet). The surface of imported leather is better than that of domestic one whose hurt rate is high due to low mechanized degree. You'd better ask the seat cover factory to present the inspection materials of leather. Generally, it is no problem to high quality leather even if it has been applied for 5 years, while low quality leather may be rejected after serving only 3 months.
